Nigerian education advocate, Mr. Seyi Anifowose, has officially entered the Guinness World Records after successfully convening the largest gathering of teachers in history.

The landmark feat was achieved on September 20, 2025, during the “Let There Be Teachers Conference” held at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, attracting tens of thousands of educators from across the country.

In a statement released by 1 Million Teachers on Friday, Guinness World Records confirmed the milestone during a Zoom call on September 23, with Rishi Nath, a GWR representative, commending Anifowose and his team for spotlighting a critical national issue.

“This is more than just a number — it is a victory for education and for Nigeria,” Anifowose said. “Teachers stood in the rain, braved the sun, and endured long verification lines to make this possible. Their dedication proves that teachers matter.”

Organisers had projected a turnout of 60,000 teachers, highlighting the significance of the mobilisation. According to Anifowose, hosting the event at Tafawa Balewa Square was symbolic, as the venue was where Nigeria’s independence was declared in 1960.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State for hosting the event, and to Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State for his encouragement. He also thanked teachers’ unions, education agencies, and other partners whose support made the historic conference possible.

Beyond the world record, Anifowose revealed plans to advance policy advocacy, particularly on reforms to improve teacher welfare and the overall quality of education.

Nigeria’s education system has long faced challenges including underfunding, overcrowded classrooms, and a shortage of qualified teachers. UNESCO reports that the country suffers one of the world’s most severe teacher deficits, making the need for systemic reform urgent.

“This achievement is just the beginning. The next phase is about turning this recognition into meaningful change for teachers nationwide,” Anifowose added.

Stakeholders across Nigeria have welcomed the development, describing it as a rallying point for renewed focus on teacher training, improved remuneration, and policies that make the profession attractive to future generations.
