Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has assured residents of Maiduguri and surrounding areas that there is no immediate threat of flooding despite a noticeable rise in the water level at Alau Dam.

Speaking during an inspection of ongoing reconstruction work at the dam site, Governor Zulum emphasized that the situation is under control, citing expert assessments. “Based on the engineering knowledge available to us, we have concluded that there is no cause for alarm,” he said.
He noted that new water channels have been opened to reduce pressure on the dam, resulting in a drop of about four inches in water level in recent days. He added that further reduction is expected as preventive measures continue.
The governor, however, issued a stern warning to residents in flood-prone areas against obstructing drainage systems or erecting structures on waterways. “Most importantly, I want to warn the people of this state to desist from building on waterways and be very careful,” he said.
Zulum urged citizens to adopt responsible environmental habits, stressing the need for regular drainage maintenance. “If you have a drainage in front of your house, you must ensure it is kept clean at all times,” he advised.
He also revealed plans to revisit Maiduguri’s master plan in a bid to identify and correct structural distortions that may worsen flooding in the future. “We must go back to the drawing board, study the master plan, and ensure that all tributaries and waterways are cleared to allow for the smooth flow of water into the main canal,” he said.
Addressing concerns over the pace of repair work at the dam, Zulum acknowledged earlier delays due to technical issues but confirmed that contractors are now fully mobilized and making progress. “The contractor is doing a good job,” he affirmed.
His remarks come amid heightened anxiety among residents following recent heavy rainfall, which raised fears of another flood disaster. In 2024, the collapse of Alau Dam led to a devastating flood that claimed several lives and displaced many.
The state government has since intensified efforts to avert a recurrence, with the governor’s latest visit aimed at reassuring the public and reinforcing commitment to flood prevention and infrastructure rehabilitation.
