The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) has strongly condemned a raid by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as a “gangster-like invasion” involving over 50 armed agents who stormed the premises early Saturday morning.

According to OOPL, the EFCC operatives unlawfully entered the library grounds around 2 a.m. without warrants, fired gunshots, and caused chaos at a privately organized, publicly advertised event. Several guests were reportedly injured while attempting to flee the scene.

The EFCC had earlier confirmed a raid in Abeokuta, during which 93 suspected internet fraudsters were arrested at a nearby hotel. However, the library insists its property was not part of the targeted location and says the EFCC’s actions were based on unverified intelligence.

Library officials further claimed that both the police officers stationed at the gate and additional personnel from the Kemta Police Station—invited by event organizers for security—had no prior knowledge of the operation. The EFCC team, reportedly led by an officer identified as “Olapade,” failed to produce any search or arrest warrants during the operation.

“The OOPL premises were invaded by a Gestapo-like gang of over 50 armed men, shooting guns and threatening to kill people,” the library’s management said in a statement. “The incident caused panic, injuries, and terror among guests and residents on site.”

OOPL has begun its own investigation and says it will report the matter to the EFCC, the Nigeria Police, and the Department of State Services. It is also demanding a formal explanation and a public apology from the EFCC. Failure to comply, the statement warned, may lead to legal action.

“The management demands an explanation and apology for the infringement of its rights and the injuries caused to attendees,” the statement added. “If not, we will be compelled to seek redress and appropriate sanctions.”
