The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the United States government’s recent decision to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), warning that such a pronouncement and the mention of possible military action should worry every well-meaning Nigerian.
Obi noted that Nigeria is currently facing an unprecedented wave of insecurity that has led to widespread killings and destruction of property. Citing Amnesty International, he lamented that over 10,000 Nigerians have lost their lives since May 2023.
He described the incessant, unprovoked killings across the country as condemnable and called for urgent, coordinated action to end the violence. “It is important to stress that this terrible situation could have been largely avoided through competent leadership and effective governance,” he said.
While acknowledging that the insecurity challenge predates the current administration, Obi criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government for what he called a lack of competence, commitment, and prudent management of national resources. He said Nigeria’s leaders have failed to build a nation where peace, justice, and truth prevail.
“As democracies, Nigeria and the United States have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not be allowed to deteriorate,” Obi added.
He urged both nations to engage in constructive diplomatic dialogue and other viable measures to address Nigeria’s security crisis and restore stability.
