Odu’a Investment Company Limited has commemorated the 60th anniversary of the iconic Cocoa House in Ibadan with a symbolic ceremony and the unveiling of ambitious plans to modernize the historic structure.

Commissioned in 1965 and standing 105 metres tall with 26 floors, Cocoa House holds the distinction of being West Africa’s first skyscraper and a symbol of the region’s agricultural prosperity. The building was financed by the defunct Western Region Government through proceeds from cocoa, timber, and rubber—an enduring testament to visionary leadership and economic foresight.
At a commemorative event held at the base of the tower in Ibadan, Mr. Yemi Ajao, Executive Director of Business Development at Odu’a Investment, described Cocoa House as a national monument representing innovation, resilience, and purposeful governance.
“After 60 years, Cocoa House still stands firm, with no structural defects. It is not just a building; it is a symbol of enduring excellence,” Ajao stated.
The celebration began with a symbolic balloon release, followed by speeches and reflections from dignitaries, business stakeholders, and Odu’a Group staff. Ajao highlighted recent efforts to revamp the building’s facilities, including floor-by-floor upgrades, a redesigned reception area, improved parking, and enhancements to the surrounding landscape.
He also disclosed plans to install a fifth elevator to complement the existing four, aiming to improve accessibility and convenience for tenants and visitors. Additional infrastructural improvements are reportedly underway.
Mrs. Abiola Ajayi, Company Secretary and Head of Legal Services at Odu’a Investment, echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the legacy and cultural significance of Cocoa House.
“This milestone reminds us of the heritage left by our founding fathers,” she said. “We’ve renovated the reception, upgraded the car park, and refreshed the entire structure. This is just the beginning. It’s our duty to preserve and expand upon the foundation they laid.”
Ajayi also hinted that another monumental project—comparable in scale and impact to Cocoa House—will soon be launched as part of Odu’a’s legacy-driven growth strategy.
The 60th anniversary of Cocoa House not only celebrates a landmark of the past but signals a renewed commitment to innovation and heritage preservation in Nigeria’s evolving skyline.
