The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the recent arrest of former governor and current senator Aminu Tambuwal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling it a politically motivated move aimed at suppressing opposition voices.

Tambuwal, who served as Sokoto State governor for eight years and previously as Speaker of the House of Representatives, was taken into EFCC custody on Monday over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals totaling N189 billion.

This development follows accusations from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which claimed the EFCC is selectively targeting opposition politicians through investigations that appear politically driven. The ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated that some EFCC probes involve reopening old cases rather than new evidence, linking them to political affiliations.

In response, the Sokoto PDP, through its Publicity Secretary Hassan Sanyinnawal, condemned Tambuwal’s arrest as part of a broader scheme by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to intimidate political opponents and weaken growing resistance against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Describing the investigation as a mere “fishing expedition” based on a “phantom case,” the PDP accused political figures in Sokoto and Abuja of trying to tarnish Tambuwal’s reputation and force him to abandon his stance against poor governance.

The party further defended Tambuwal’s tenure as one marked by fiscal discipline and transparency, accusing the EFCC of selective prosecution while ignoring corruption allegations against members of the ruling APC.

The PDP urged anti-corruption agencies to conduct their duties impartially and called on its supporters to remain calm yet resolute in the pursuit of genuine democracy and good governance.

“Our confidence in Senator Tambuwal’s integrity remains unshaken despite these politically motivated investigations,” the statement concluded.
