Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, was buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, amid tight security and the presence of high-profile dignitaries from within and outside the country.

The janaza (Islamic funeral prayer) was conducted at approximately 4:50 p.m. before his remains were interred in accordance with Islamic rites.

Buhari’s body had earlier arrived in Katsina aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft from London, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior government officials.

Security was significantly heightened in Daura, with armoured vehicles, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and heavily armed soldiers deployed along key routes leading to the town.

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Katsina on Tuesday afternoon to attend the funeral, accompanied by First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. A delegation from the Republic of Niger was also present, highlighting Buhari’s diplomatic ties and influence beyond Nigeria.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar confirmed his attendance in a post on X (formerly Twitter):
“I just arrived in Daura for the interment of former President Muhammadu Buhari.”
The influx of dignitaries, political allies, military chiefs, and foreign diplomats led to hotels across Katsina being fully booked since Monday.
President Tinubu had announced Buhari’s death on Sunday evening, stating that the former president passed away at about 4:30 p.m. in London after a prolonged illness.
Sources confirmed to SaharaReporters that Buhari died of leukemia.
