The Kaduna State Police Command has banned a proposed rally by supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, which was reportedly planned in celebration of his birthday.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the Command said intelligence reports indicated that criminal elements intended to infiltrate the gathering, potentially using it as a cover to incite violence and disrupt public order.
The police emphasized that all political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended across Kaduna State until the official commencement of political campaigns, as outlined by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The statement further noted that the rally coincided with the date scheduled for political party primaries ahead of a forthcoming bye-election. According to the Command, allowing the Obi supporters’ rally to go ahead would risk overlapping with designated primary election venues, creating the potential for tension, clashes, and a breakdown of law and order.
“The command advises the organisers to suspend the planned rally to ensure public safety and prevent its hijacking by miscreants,” the statement read. It also warned that legal action would be taken against any individuals or groups who defy the directive.
While reaffirming its respect for citizens’ rights to association and political expression, the Command reiterated that the prevailing suspension on political rallies remains in force and urged compliance to maintain peace in the state.
The Kaduna Police Command assured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property and pledged swift action against any threats to security or public order.
