President Donald J. Trump has expressed deep concern over what he described as an existential threat to Christianity in Nigeria, following reports of widespread killings of Christians by radical Islamist groups.
In a statement posted on his official social media account late Thursday, President Trump said thousands of Christians have been killed in Nigeria, warning that the United States “cannot stand by” while such atrocities continue.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern,’” Trump stated.
He said the scale of killings in Nigeria—estimated at 3,100 out of 4,476 globally—was alarming, adding that urgent action must be taken to protect vulnerable communities.
President Trump directed Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately investigate the situation and report back to him.
“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria and numerous other countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world,” the president declared.
The U.S. government’s renewed focus on Nigeria comes amid growing international concern about religiously motivated violence and insecurity across several parts of the country.
