Kwara SUBEB Chairman Raheem Adaramaja has come under fire for allegedly humiliating teachers and the Vice Principal of Government Day Secondary School, Amule, Ilorin, by forcing them to sweep the school premises during an official inspection.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, left many staff members embarrassed as they were compelled to clean the compound in front of their students. According to sources, Adaramaja, who was said to be acting on the directive of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, accused the teachers of neglecting their duty to maintain a clean environment.
Despite the teachers’ explanations that the students had only just returned from their break, the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWASUBEB) chairman insisted they pick up litter and sweep the school grounds.
Witnesses described the situation as demeaning, expressing shock that a senior education official and former teacher would publicly disgrace his colleagues. “Professor Adaramaja humiliated us in front of our students. It was painful and stripped us of our dignity,” one teacher said.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ilorin East Branch, Comrade Saka Saafi O. Adanla, condemned Adaramaja’s conduct, calling it “unacceptable and disrespectful.”
“The humiliation of our members by the SUBEB Chairman is totally uncalled for. Teachers are not janitors, and we demand an immediate apology from Professor Adaramaja,” Adanla stated in a press release on Wednesday.
He further assured the affected teachers that the union’s state leadership was aware of the matter and would take steps to safeguard their rights and dignity. “Be assured that we are on top of the situation. We appreciate your commitment to your profession despite these challenges,” the statement added.
