The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have threatened to down tools if the Federal Government fails to resolve lingering issues affecting non-academic staff within seven days.

In a joint letter dated September 12, 2025, and addressed to Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, the unions condemned what they called the “unjust” distribution of ₦50 billion in earned allowances, the non-payment of withheld salaries, and the delay in implementing the 25% and 35% salary increments earlier approved.
The letter, signed by SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, reminded the minister of a previous communication sent on June 18, 2025, and a follow-up meeting held on July 4, where the government promised to set up a tripartite committee involving the Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the unions to address the grievances.
However, the unions said there has been no meaningful progress since then.
“Despite our repeated efforts to draw attention to these matters, nothing positive seems to be coming from your office,” the statement read.
They also accused the government of sidelining non-teaching staff in the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/University-based unions’ agreement, alleging that while talks with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been concluded, discussions with NASU and SSANU remain stalled.
The unions warned that if their demands are not met by Monday, September 22, they will embark on “a series of legitimate industrial actions, including strikes,” to press home their demands.
