President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on the victorious Super Falcons team following their historic win at the 2025 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The team, which returned to Nigeria on Sunday, was received with great excitement at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by top government officials, football fans, and cultural troupes.

During a celebratory event held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu hosted the players and coaching crew, commending their resilience and performance throughout the tournament. The Super Falcons defeated Morocco 3-2 in a gripping final match held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday, clinching the continental title.
Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, speaking at the ceremony, dedicated the victory to all Nigerians, especially young girls across the country.
“This is a celebration for every girl in our villages, towns and cities who dares to dream, every family that believes in unity, and all Nigerians who carry our green and white flag with pride,” she said.
“This title is for you, Mr. President, for Nigeria, and for every girl who dreams of representing this country on the global stage.”
President Tinubu awarded each player and technical crew member the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). In addition, each team member will receive a three-bedroom apartment and a $100,000 cash reward.
Tinubu had earlier sent a presidential delegation to Morocco ahead of the final, showing his support for the team. In a statement from the State House, the President described the Falcons’ three-week campaign as “awe-inspiring” and “a shining example of national strength and unity.”
He also praised the team’s sportsmanship, particularly their visit to an injured South African player, Gabriela Salgado, after their semi-final victory over Banyana Banyana.
“I am very proud of you,” Tinubu told the team.
“You have lifted the spirit of the nation. You are a pride to your generation, and I congratulate the coaches, management, and sports officials. Rasheedat, I watched your penalty kick—very courageous! God bless you all. Celebrate and stay safe.”
The celebration marks a significant moment not only for Nigerian football but also for the recognition of women’s achievements in sports on a national scale.
