In a sharp escalation of hostilities between Washington and Moscow, U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of two nuclear-powered submarines to undisclosed strategic locations, citing “provocative and inflammatory” remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Medvedev, who now serves as Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, made a series of posts on social media mocking President Trump’s criticism of Russian officials. He described Trump’s outbursts as “nervous reactions,” claiming they prove that Russia is on the right path.

In response, Trump issued a stern warning via his Truth Social platform, branding Medvedev’s comments as “foolish and inflammatory.” He declared that the movement of nuclear submarines was a precautionary step in case the rhetoric leads to concrete threats.
“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances,” Trump stated. “Based on the highly provocative statements… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions.”
The U.S. president’s remarks followed an earlier clash over Trump’s criticism of the Russian and Indian economies, which he claimed were “dead” due to lack of cooperation with the U.S. Medvedev responded with scorn, rejecting Trump’s demands for an end to Russia’s military operations in Ukraine and dismissing threats of secondary sanctions as ineffective political theatrics.
“Ultimatums from Trump won’t stop us from defending our national interests,” Medvedev said. He further accused Trump of sounding no different from his predecessor, Joe Biden.
The deployment of nuclear-capable vessels marks a rare and bold show of military muscle, raising alarms over the deepening strain in U.S.–Russia relations. International observers have expressed concern that the situation could spiral further, with unpredictable consequences.
Analysts say the latest move by the White House signals a shift toward a more aggressive posture, one that may provoke a corresponding response from Moscow.
As diplomatic channels remain quiet and rhetoric on both sides escalates, the global community is watching closely, hoping to avoid a direct confrontation between the two nuclear-armed powers.
