Two individuals have been confirmed dead following a violent attack by suspected herdsmen on farmers in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that the victims were attacked on Wednesday while working on their farms. “Two people were killed,” a local source confirmed.
The latest attack has reignited concerns among residents over the rising insecurity in the region, particularly in rural communities such as Paiko, Ibwa, Dobi, and surrounding areas.
Sani Usman Zakariyya, a resident of the area, raised the alarm in an open letter decrying the recurring assaults by armed herders. He accused the authorities of turning a blind eye to the plight of indigenous farmers who have long suffered killings and displacement.
“For years, the indigenous people of Gwagwalada have been attacked on their farms and even in their homes without provocation,” Zakariyya wrote. “Despite repeated incidents in places like Paiko, Ibwa, and Dobi, no concrete action has been taken to protect the residents.”
He further alleged that political compromises had rendered many community leaders silent, allowing the violence to continue unchecked.
Zakariyya called on the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order a full-scale, impartial investigation into the attacks and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The bloodshed must end,” he stated. “We need urgent security intervention and justice for the victims. People’s lives are far more important than political interests.”
Residents continue to appeal for increased security presence in vulnerable areas and demand accountability for the ongoing violence affecting their communities.
