UK Threatens to Recognise Palestinian State by September Unless Israel Meets Key Conditions – PM Starmer

The United Kingdom is set to officially recognise Palestine as an independent state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September—unless Israel takes significant steps to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and commit to a peaceful resolution, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced.

The declaration followed an emergency cabinet meeting in London on Tuesday, convened in response to the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Starmer’s statement came just 24 hours after holding talks in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump, where the Middle East conflict was a central topic.

Outlining the UK’s conditions, Starmer said Israel must:

  • Agree to an immediate and lasting ceasefire,
  • Allow unimpeded UN humanitarian aid deliveries into Gaza,
  • Halt further annexation in the West Bank, and
  • Commit to a sustainable peace process that revives hopes for a two-state solution.

Starmer’s announcement aligns the UK with recent moves by France, which last week pledged to recognise a Palestinian state in September—becoming the first G7 nation to do so. Ireland, Spain, and Norway already extended recognition in 2024.

According to Sky News, Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, recently passed a vote supporting West Bank annexation, drawing strong international criticism.

The UK’s policy has traditionally supported Palestinian statehood only through direct negotiations with Israel. However, growing pressure from within the Labour Party—more than 200 MPs including senior figures like Emily Thornberry—has prompted Starmer to shift.

Despite prior hesitations over the potential diplomatic fallout with Washington, especially before last year’s general election, Starmer now says the urgency of the crisis outweighs those concerns.

“Our aim remains a secure Israel alongside a sovereign Palestinian state. That vision is now under severe threat,” Starmer stated. “This is the moment to act. If Israel fails to take the necessary steps, the UK will recognise Palestine in September as a meaningful step towards lasting peace.”

Starmer also confirmed that British humanitarian aid has reached Gaza by both air and land, but warned that a minimum of 500 aid trucks must enter daily to address the deepening hunger crisis, with malnutrition affecting over a quarter of children and pregnant women.

He reiterated the UK’s support for ceasefire efforts led by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, while also working on a broader peace initiative aimed at ensuring stability, governance, and eventual negotiations for a two-state framework.

“This is not just about diplomacy—it’s about human lives. Recognising Palestine is a strategic and moral decision aimed at ending this suffering and moving the region towards a just peace,” he concluded.
