The Delta State Police Command has taken swift action following the circulation of a viral video showing officers assaulting a young man in Asaba.
The incident, which occurred along Hospital Road, reportedly began when the man insisted that the officers display their bare hands before searching his bag—a precaution he took to prevent possible evidence planting. Eyewitnesses claim this request angered the officers, leading to a physical assault.
In a statement released on Sunday, July 27, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that upon receiving the footage, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, ordered the immediate identification and apprehension of the officers involved.
The officers have since been detained and are awaiting an orderly room trial. Their team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has also been issued a formal query.
SP Edafe emphasized that such conduct is against the values of the Command. He assured the public that disciplinary action will be taken in line with the Police Act and regulations, and stressed that the Command under CP Abaniwonda’s leadership will not tolerate any abuse of power.

“The Commissioner of Police has charged all personnel to adhere strictly to the principles of professional policing, ensuring full respect for the fundamental human rights of all citizens as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” Edafe stated.
He urged the public to remain calm and reassured citizens that justice will be served, adding that the disciplinary measures taken would serve as a strong deterrent to other officers.
