PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA — The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of 32-year-old Saint Sunny Amadi, who succumbed to severe burns after his house was allegedly set on fire by his pregnant girlfriend in the Choba area of Port Harcourt.

According to a statement issued by the police on Monday, the tragic incident involved Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level undergraduate student at the University of Port Harcourt. It is alleged that Cynthia set the victim ablaze inside his residence, causing extensive injuries.
“Upon receiving the distress report at approximately 11:12 a.m., officers from the Choba Police Division immediately visited the scene and the hospital where the victim had been rushed. Sadly, the victim passed away while receiving treatment at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH),” the statement read.
The suspect, Cynthia Chukwundah, who is reportedly pregnant with the deceased’s child, also sustained serious burns in the incident and is currently hospitalized. Due to her critical condition, police say she has been unable to provide a full statement but is expected to do so once her health improves.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Police authorities have launched a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
