The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday convened a meeting with prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his official residence in Abuja.

Wike said the gathering was an opportunity to deliberate on the current state of the party and chart a way forward.
Those present included the PDP National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu; former governors of Abia and Benue States, Okezie Ikpeazu and Samuel Ortom; Minority Leader of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, Kingsley Chinda; the Speaker of the Rivers Assembly, alongside other lawmakers.
The meeting comes amid Wike’s renewed warning that the PDP risks plunging into crisis if it attempts to bring back former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into its fold ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a media chat earlier on Monday, the former Rivers governor said the PDP had not learned from the missteps that contributed to its poor outing in the 2023 polls.
He faulted the party’s decision at the time to allow both the presidential candidate and the national chairman to emerge from the North, describing it as politically reckless and unfair.
“From day one, I told my colleagues, PDP, you are shooting yourself. If you allow this to continue, you will pay dearly. You cannot have the presidential candidate and the national chairman from the same region,” Wike stated.
He accused the party of ignoring calls for equity and balance, a decision he argued was central to its electoral defeat.
The Abuja meeting is expected to influence ongoing conversations about the PDP’s leadership structure and strategy ahead of the next election cycle.
