The House of Representatives has passed the Executive Bill seeking to establish state police, marking a major step toward the creation of a decentralised policing system in Nigeria.
The bill was approved during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers withdrew an earlier constitutional amendment proposal on state police and adopted the Executive Bill instead.
The latest development follows the Senate’s recent passage of its version of the legislation, bringing the National Assembly closer to completing the legislative process required to introduce a dual policing structure in the country.
If eventually signed into law, the proposed framework is expected to allow states to establish and operate their own police services alongside the Nigeria Police Force.
