The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Wednesday held a private meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, sparking renewed interest in the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election.

Photos of the meeting were shared on X by Obi’s campaign photographer, Esther Umoh, who confirmed that the former Anambra State governor met with the ex-president earlier in the day.

The images showed Obi, dressed in a blue traditional outfit, walking alongside Obasanjo, who wore a white native attire complemented by a blue patterned cap. A Catholic bishop was also seen with the two leaders during parts of the meeting, with photographs taken both indoors and outdoors.

Neither Obi nor Obasanjo disclosed the purpose of the meeting or the issues discussed.

The visit comes at a time when speculation continues over Obasanjo’s political stance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Recently, the Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum alleged that the former president was quietly backing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid despite his perceived support for opposition figures.

However, Obasanjo’s former Political Adviser, Akin Osuntokun, dismissed the claim, maintaining that the former president remains a key supporter of the opposition coalition. According to Osuntokun, Obasanjo played a significant role in facilitating the proposed Peter Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket, with Kwankwaso expected to serve as Obi’s running mate.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE Television, Osuntokun described Obasanjo as one of the principal backers of the opposition alliance.

The latest meeting between Obi and Obasanjo is expected to fuel further speculation over the former president’s involvement in ongoing consultations among opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 elections, although no official statement has been issued regarding the purpose of Wednesday’s meeting.
