The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has declared invalid a traditional title recently conferred on Brazilian national Paola Almeida Ferreira by Yemoja worshippers in Oyo.
Ferreira was reportedly presented with the title “Yeye Atayese Oniyemoja of Oyo Land” on August 23, 2026. She subsequently announced the conferment on social media, describing it as a responsibility and a spiritual connection.
However, in a statement issued from the Alaafin’s Palace on August 26, the monarch said the title was not recognised under the native laws, customs and chieftaincy traditions of Oyo Land.
The statement, titled “Title Yeye Atayese Oniyemoja of Oyo Land,” and referenced AL 1/VOL.8/105, was signed by Oba Owoade.
The Alaafin maintained that no traditional title could validly be conferred within Oyo without the knowledge and approval of the palace.
According to him, the Alaafin remains the prescribed authority and custodian of Oyo’s historical and cultural heritage.
He therefore formally declared the title bestowed on Ferreira on August 23 “officially invalid.”
Before the palace declaration, Ferreira had celebrated the title in a Facebook post on August 24, explaining its spiritual significance.
She described Atayese Oniyemoja as a priestly title connected with the Yemoja tradition and associated with the deity’s strength, protection and transformative power.
Ferreira said Yemoja symbolises life, motherhood, acceptance, depth and strength, adding that her waters are believed to nourish, protect and renew.
She further explained that bearing the title represented a commitment to serving Yemoja and supporting devotees seeking balance, prosperity and renewal.
“May the waters of Yemọja continue to open paths, bring transformation, and strengthen all those who walk under her protection. Àṣẹ!” she wrote.
The Alaafin’s declaration, however, means that the title conferred on the Brazilian national does not have official recognition under the traditional chieftaincy authority of Oyo.
