The Alaafin’s Palace has refuted claims that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, consulted the Alaafin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland and the Soun of Ogbomoso over the rotational chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
In a press release dated January 15, 2026, the Palace said it had been alerted to a statement attributed to the governor suggesting that such consultations took place. The Palace, however, stated categorically that no meeting was held at any time between His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, and the governor on the matter.
It also dismissed claims that the Alaafin met or held discussions with the Olubadan or the Soun of Ogbomoso regarding the issue. According to the Palace, the Alaafin neither endorsed nor made any statement in support of a rotational chairmanship among the three traditional rulers in the state.
The statement noted that the position of the Alaafin and the entire Oyo community on the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs had already been clearly outlined in a memorandum submitted to the governor by the Oyo Council of Elders.
The statement was signed by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Paramount Ruler of Oyo Kingdom and Superior Head of Yorubaland.
