The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission has announced January 16, 2027, as the date for the conduct of local government elections across the state, pledging a transparent, credible and peaceful process.
The commission’s Chairman, Babatunde Adeniyi, disclosed this in a statement released on Thursday in Ibadan, following an inaugural meeting with members of the commission’s leadership and management team at the OYSIEC headquarters in Agodi.
Adeniyi said the meeting focused on the commission’s mandate to organise free, fair and acceptable local government council elections in the state’s 33 local government areas.
According to him, voting will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in all polling units statewide. He added that campaigns will officially end at midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027.
The OYSIEC chairman further stated that any run-off or re-run election, if required, would be conducted on Saturday, January 23, 2027.
The statement explained that the tenure of current chairmen and councillors in the 33 local government councils is expected to expire on May 23, 2027, in line with the Local Government Law of Oyo State.
It noted that the commission is empowered by relevant provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission Law to issue notice of the election within the stipulated timeframe.
The commission also called on political parties, candidates and other stakeholders to cooperate with OYSIEC to ensure the successful conduct of free, fair, credible and transparent local government elections on January 16, 2027.
