No fewer than six people lost their lives, while 23 others sustained injuries after a truck crashed along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

The lone accident occurred around the Foursquare Camp area and involved a white-and-blue DAF CF 380 truck with registration number SNA 287 XA. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from northern Nigeria to Lagos State, conveying passengers alongside cattle.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the truck was carrying about 35 cows, 29 of which died in the crash. Preliminary findings linked the incident to excessive speed and driver fatigue.

The injured victims and the bodies of the deceased were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital, GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, as well as Victory Hospital, Ogere.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Sector Command spokesperson of the FRSC, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said the crash occurred at about 11:27 a.m., adding that rescue operatives from the Ogunmakin Unit arrived at the scene within two minutes.

“A total of 29 persons were involved in the crash. Twenty-three persons were injured, while six persons were killed,” Odunsi-Oyewole said.

He noted that the truck was involved in mixed loading of passengers and cattle, a practice the FRSC strongly discourages.

“There is no proper segregation between goods and humans in such cases. During a crash, it becomes difficult to separate humans from goods, which can lead to avoidable loss of lives,” he explained.

The FRSC said investigations were ongoing to determine other mechanical or contributing factors responsible for the crash.

Meanwhile, the command advised motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure regular vehicle maintenance, adhere to speed limits, and avoid driving while fatigued. It also urged all road users to strictly comply with traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
