The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the rationale behind the dates announced for the 2027 General Election, following public concerns over their coincidence with certain national holidays and observances.

In a statement issued on February 13, 2026, the Commission said the timetable was prepared in strict compliance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022.

INEC explained that its regulations, in place since 2019, clearly stipulate that presidential and National Assembly elections must be held on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are to take place two weeks later.

Based on these provisions, the Commission fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

However, INEC acknowledged that some stakeholders have raised concerns about the alignment of the scheduled dates with nationally recognised holidays and other observances, which could affect voter participation.

The Commission assured Nigerians that it remains sensitive to legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of the elections. It disclosed that consultations are ongoing and that it may seek appropriate legislative intervention if necessary, provided any adjustments remain within constitutional and statutory boundaries.

INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, inclusivity and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election, adding that the public will be informed of any further developments.

The statement was signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
