The senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, Lere Oyewumi, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party.

Oyewumi, who was elected on the PDP platform during the 2023 general elections, announced his defection in a statement released on Monday in Osogbo. Prior to his exit, he was the last PDP senator from Osun State after the earlier defections of fellow lawmakers Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP in the state had earlier suffered additional setbacks when three members of the House of Representatives also defected to the APC during a wave of defections that affected the party in 2025.

Although the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, moved to the Accord Party in December 2025, Oyewumi had remained with the PDP until now. However, speculation about his continued membership intensified following the recent defection of six House of Representatives members from Osun State to the Accord Party.

The development also came after 25 PDP members of the Osun State House of Assembly resolved to join Accord in a move aimed at aligning with the governor.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Timileyin Popoola, the senator was said to have formally registered as a member of the Accord Party at Ward 9 in Ikire, located in Irewole Local Government Area of the state.

According to the statement, the registration ceremony took place in his hometown where party members and supporters welcomed him into the Accord Party. The Osun State Chairman of the party, Victor Akande, alongside other leaders and stakeholders, received the senator into the party.

The statement added that Oyewumi’s decision followed his earlier resignation from the PDP, citing irreconcilable differences within the opposition party.

It further noted that the defection reflects the senator’s commitment to effective representation, responsive leadership, and policies aimed at promoting development for his constituents in Osun West.
