The United States government has announced plans to designate the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation, with the measure US Moves to Designate Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Groupexpected to take effect later in March.
In a statement released on Monday, the US Department of State said the decision was approved by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to the statement, the group will first be listed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) and will later be formally recognised as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) starting from March 16, 2026.
Rubio said the designation was part of efforts by the United States to counter violence linked to the group during the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
He accused the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood of carrying out attacks against civilians in a bid to destabilise peace efforts and promote extremist ideology.
The statement further alleged that some members of the group had received training and support from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a force linked to the government of Iran. It claimed the fighters were responsible for severe acts of violence, including mass killings of civilians.
Rubio also noted that the group’s armed faction, the al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade, had already been sanctioned by the US government in September 2025 over its role in the war in Sudan.
The US Secretary of State said Washington would continue to take steps to prevent both Iran and Muslim Brotherhood-linked networks from accessing resources used to support extremist activities.
The decision was taken under provisions of the US Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, which give the American government authority to impose sanctions and designate organisations involved in terrorism.
