The Federal Government has started evacuating Nigerians who wish to leave Iran, moving them across the Armenian border to ensure their safety as tensions escalate in the Middle East.
The situation intensified on February 28 following coordinated military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel. The attacks triggered retaliatory missile and drone strikes across parts of the region, raising fears of a broader conflict.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed the evacuation in a post shared on Tuesday on her X account.
According to her, officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are overseeing the process, escorting Nigerians who have indicated interest in leaving the country and facilitating their movement into Armenia.
She also assured that no Nigerian in Iran has been harmed since the crisis began, adding that embassy officials are stationed at the border to receive and assist evacuees.
Dabiri-Erewa stated that Nigerians willing to leave are being safely escorted to the border, where diplomatic officials are helping them complete their evacuation process.
The move comes amid growing concerns about the safety of foreign nationals living in parts of the Middle East as tensions in the region continue to rise.
