Angry residents disrupted a rally organised by the City Boy Movement in Owerri, Imo State, on Saturday, carting away several empowerment items intended for distribution during the event held in support of Bola Tinubu’s possible re-election bid in 2027.
The rally, held in the Imo State capital, was organised by supporters of the president under the City Boy Movement platform, a political group backing the administration of Tinubu.
However, the gathering reportedly turned chaotic after some residents stormed the venue, causing confusion and forcing many participants to flee.
Witnesses said the event initially attracted a large crowd but later became rowdy, with little or no crowd control.
A video obtained by SaharaReporters showed the venue heavily crowded, with attendees running in different directions while others struggled to grab items brought for distribution as part of an empowerment programme.
Some individuals were seen carrying away sewing machines, refrigerators and other materials believed to be among the items prepared for beneficiaries at the rally.
Within minutes, the area descended into disorder, with shouting and pushing among the crowd as people attempted either to escape the commotion or secure the items.
Videos circulating online also showed dozens of people rushing out of the rally ground while others left with various items believed to be part of the empowerment packages.
The City Boy Movement is among several political support groups mobilising grassroots backing for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, although the president has not formally declared his intention to seek a second term.
As of the time of filing this report, organisers of the rally and security agencies in Imo State had yet to issue an official statement on the incident, and it was unclear whether anyone was injured during the disruption.
