The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has cautioned politicians across party lines to avoid using religion as a tool for political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Friday at his private residence in Bodija, Ibadan, during the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the monarch stressed the need for national unity and urged leaders to move away from divisive politics.

According to him, modern democratic realities no longer support the manipulation of religious sentiments for electoral gain. He emphasized that Nigerians from diverse backgrounds should work together without allowing religion to influence political decisions.

Ladoja also addressed concerns about insecurity in parts of the state, particularly incidents of kidnapping. He noted that while such cases still occur, security agencies are making progress in tackling them. He explained that many of the reported incidents are criminal acts driven by extortion rather than organized terrorism.

Citing a recent case along the Oluyole axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the traditional ruler revealed that three suspects had been arrested and two victims rescued, describing it as a sign of progress in addressing security challenges.

Despite these efforts, Ladoja identified land grabbing as a more serious threat to the socio-economic development of Ibadan. He warned that the practice could discourage investment and destabilize property ownership.

He assured residents that traditional authorities are working with government agencies to curb the menace through increased public awareness, stronger community vigilance, and the revival of local security structures.

“The traditional institution is actively engaging the people and mobilising local vigilantes. Ibadan has strong traditional systems, and we are strengthening them to maintain order,” he said.
