Former Kano State Governor, , has endorsed the decision of the to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as a reflection of fairness and the party’s power-sharing arrangement.

Kwankwaso made this known on Saturday while addressing delegates, party supporters and stakeholders at the party’s national convention in Abuja.

According to him, the South should be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure in line with the party’s zoning understanding.

“I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South so the region can complete its eight years. This aligns with the party’s zoning arrangement and internal agreement,” he said.

He also appealed to Nigerians and party loyalists to intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging eligible citizens to register with the party.

The endorsement followed the official adoption of a resolution by the NDC zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

The motion was moved during the convention by the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, .

Announcing the resolution, the party’s National Chairman, , said the arrangement formed part of a broader strategy aimed at balancing regional interests within the opposition coalition.

Cleopas added that the presidential ticket would return to Northern Nigeria in 2031 after the South completes its tenure.

The party also ratified the election of members of its National Working Committee during the convention.

Political observers believe the zoning arrangement may strengthen the chances of former Anambra State Governor, , and other southern aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

The development comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition leaders intensify efforts to build a united front against President and the ruling .

Meanwhile, Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC in Abuja during the convention and urged members to avoid internal conflicts and focus on national development.

Speaking at the event, Obi said their decision to align with the party was driven by the need for a stable political platform free from internal crises.
