The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced Monday, May 18, 2026, as the first day of Zulhijja 1447AH.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the Sultanate Council in Sokoto and signed by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, the Sultan confirmed the commencement of the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, marking the start of an important period for Muslims worldwide.
Zulhijja is regarded as one of the most sacred months in Islam, during which Muslim faithful undertake the annual Hajj pilgrimage and prepare for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The Sultanate Council urged Muslims across Nigeria and beyond to dedicate the holy month to prayers, acts of sacrifice, and charitable deeds aimed at promoting peace, unity, and national development.
The statement also encouraged Muslims to remain committed to Islamic teachings and continue praying for stability, harmony, and progress in the country.
