Premier Hotel Reopens as Luxury Five-Star Destination After Major Redevelopment

Premier Hotel, one of Ibadan’s most iconic landmarks, has officially reopened after undergoing an extensive redevelopment that transformed it into a five-star hospitality destination.

The historic hotel, located on Mokola Hill, resumed operations on Thursday following more than three years of reconstruction. Originally commissioned in 1966, the facility has long been regarded as a symbol of the former Western Region’s commitment to tourism, business, and economic development.

The renovation, which began after the hotel closed in December 2022, expanded its accommodation capacity from 87 to 154 luxury rooms. The upgraded facility now features modern conference halls, contemporary restaurants, enhanced recreational facilities, and other amenities designed to meet international hospitality standards.

President Bola Tinubu, represented at the reopening by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the project as the restoration of a national landmark. He said the redevelopment demonstrates that Nigeria’s heritage assets can be preserved while being modernised to support economic growth.

According to him, tourism and hospitality remain key pillars of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with investments in infrastructure, culture, and hospitality expected to attract more visitors, create jobs, support local businesses, and strengthen the country’s economy.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Misbau Babatunde, said the hotel’s revival reinforces its status as an enduring symbol of the state’s cultural, social, and economic heritage. He expressed confidence that the upgraded facility would attract conferences, business travellers, and leisure tourists to Ibadan.

Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, noted that Premier Hotel was originally conceived as the flagship hospitality asset of the old Western Region. He said its location on Mokola Hill was carefully selected for its cool climate, panoramic views of the ancient city, and unique appeal that made it a preferred destination for visitors over the decades.

The Group Managing Director of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, Abdulrahman Yinusa, said the redevelopment was aimed at repositioning the hotel as a world-class hospitality destination capable of competing with leading luxury hotels across Africa.

Perched atop Mokola Hill, the hotel offers sweeping views of major Ibadan landmarks, including Cocoa House, the Oyo State Government Secretariat, and Bower’s Tower, further enhancing its appeal as a tourism destination.

With its blend of modern facilities and rich history, the reopening of Premier Hotel is expected to boost tourism in Oyo State, attract local and international events, create employment opportunities, and contribute significantly to the state’s hospitality industry.
