President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, in a move aimed at strengthening technical education and advancing Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.

The approval was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Presidency, the decision aligns with the administration’s commitment to developing skilled manpower, expanding technical education, and unlocking the country’s vast mineral resources for economic growth.

The statement explained that the approval followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District. The senator had advocated the establishment of a specialised institution to harness Nasarawa State’s rich solid mineral deposits and support Nigeria’s industrialisation drive.

The new university is expected to provide specialised education, research, and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and emerging technologies.

The Presidency said the institution would help produce the highly skilled workforce needed to promote value addition, technological advancement, and the sustainable development of Nigeria’s mineral resources.

It added that the conversion reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to aligning tertiary education with national development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda by establishing specialised institutions that address strategic sectors of the economy.

President Tinubu has also directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and other relevant agencies to begin the processes required to implement the transition in line with existing laws and regulations.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the education sector, the President said his government would continue investing in education as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, employment generation, and national prosperity.
