The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Hon. Adedamola Adebayo, has withdrawn from the August 15 Osun State governorship election and thrown his weight behind the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke.
Adebayo announced his decision at a press conference in Osogbo on Wednesday, just three days before the election.
According to him, the decision followed extensive consultations, careful consideration and a commitment to what he described as the best interests of Osun State and its people.
He subsequently directed his supporters, campaign members and political structures across the state to mobilise for Adeleke’s re-election bid.
“After extensive consultations and careful consideration, I have decided to endorse His Excellency, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in the August 15 gubernatorial election in Osun State,” Adebayo said.
The former candidate explained that political leadership sometimes required making difficult choices and putting the collective interest of the people above personal ambitions.
He acknowledged that some of his supporters and fellow party members might disagree with his decision, but appealed to those who shared his position to work towards Adeleke’s victory.
Adebayo also called on political leaders, candidates and their supporters to shun violence, intimidation, hate speech and political hostility before, during and after the election.
He stressed that the interests of Osun State should take precedence over individual political ambitions and party affiliations.
“Osun State is bigger than any individual. Osun State is bigger than any political party. And Osun State is certainly bigger than any election,” he said.
The PDP candidate further urged his supporters to participate in the electoral process peacefully and within the law, stressing that the peace, stability and development of the state should remain the overriding priority.
His endorsement is expected to add another political dimension to the final days of campaigning ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
