The Kaduna State Police Command has clarified the identity and condition of the individual who breached security protocol during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to the state, revealing that the man has a history of psychiatric disorders.

According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the man, identified as Umar Mohammed, is a resident of Anguwan Muazu in Kaduna. He was said to have acted out of excitement and curiosity when he jumped into a restricted area at the Murtala Mohammed Square, where President Tinubu was commissioning key projects on his recent visit to the state.
Police investigations so far indicate that Umar Mohammed was not a threat. He had been admitted into the venue as a supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), wearing the party’s campaign T-shirt and carrying banners bearing the images of President Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani — similar to other party loyalists present at the event.
DSP Hassan explained that despite his unauthorized movement toward the President, the individual was immediately intercepted and restrained by the security operatives on ground. A thorough search was conducted, and no weapons or suspicious items were found in his possession.
Further inquiries into his background revealed that Umar Mohammed has a longstanding mental health condition. “He was born with psychiatric disorders,” the statement noted, adding that his behavior was not motivated by malice or any political agenda.
In response to the widespread speculation and misinformation that followed the incident, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Yusuf, has appealed to members of the public to avoid sensationalism and refrain from politicizing the matter.
“The Command will continue to uphold professional standards in managing security and public safety, especially during high-profile events,” CP Rabiu stated. He also emphasized that a more detailed investigation into the incident is ongoing to ensure all facts are thoroughly established.
The incident, though swiftly managed, sparked a brief moment of concern among attendees, but normalcy was quickly restored, and the President’s itinerary proceeded without further disruption.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant, support law enforcement efforts, and show understanding and empathy when individuals with mental health challenges are involved in public incidents.
