An Amazon cargo aircraft burst into flames after overshooting a runway while landing at Miami International Airport in Florida on Sunday afternoon, striking several vehicles in the process.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the aircraft crashed while landing at about 2 p.m. local time. The plane had been travelling to Florida from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Images and videos circulating online showed the Prime Air aircraft coming to a stop near a roadway, with thick black smoke rising from the scene as firefighters battled the flames.
Authorities had not immediately confirmed whether anyone was killed or injured in the incident.
More than 60 units from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were deployed to the airport to respond to the crash and extinguish the fire.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company was working with local authorities to establish what happened.
“This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering details,” Nantel said. “Our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We’re doing everything we can to support those affected.”
Following the crash, all runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport were closed, while the FAA imposed a ground stop, effectively halting departing and arriving flights as emergency operations continued.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the FAA was sending investigators to the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Airport officials warned that significant flight delays were expected even after operations resumed.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) also confirmed that it was gathering information about the incident.
The cause of the runway overrun had not been determined as of Sunday night, and investigations were ongoing.
