A 40-year-old British woman, Claire Chadwick, and her unborn baby have died in Nigeria following complications associated with sepsis, prompting her family to launch a fundraising campaign to transport their remains to the United Kingdom for burial.

Chadwick, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was reportedly expecting a baby girl with her Nigerian husband, Ibrahim, when the tragedy occurred.

According to a report by the Daily Mail on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the unborn baby died in the womb before Chadwick developed sepsis, a life-threatening medical condition that eventually progressed to septic shock, leading to her death.

Sepsis occurs when the body’s immune system reacts abnormally to an infection, causing damage to its own tissues and organs. In severe cases, it can result in organ failure and death.

Reports indicate that Chadwick had relocated from the United Kingdom to Nigeria to begin a new life with her husband. The couple regularly shared videos documenting their relationship, religious beliefs and food experiences on social media platforms, including TikTok and Instagram.

Following the tragic incident, her sister, Shannon, established a GoFundMe fundraising campaign titled “Bringing Claire Home”, with a target of £10,000 to cover the expenses involved in repatriating the remains of Chadwick and her baby to Britain.

In the appeal, Shannon explained that the family was confronted with unexpected legal, logistical and financial challenges associated with bringing their loved ones home.

She said the family’s greatest wish was to ensure that both mother and child were returned to the UK and given a dignified burial close to their relatives.

“More than anything, we want them both returned so they can be laid to rest with dignity, surrounded by the family who love them,” she stated.

Speaking to WalesOnline, Shannon disclosed that Chadwick is survived by her 19-year-old son, who lives in Wales, her husband and other family members.

Describing her late sister, Shannon said she was a woman who lived life on her own terms and left a lasting impression on everyone who encountered her.

She also expressed appreciation to REST, a charity that provides assistance to families dealing with sudden or traumatic deaths of loved ones overseas, for supporting the family during the difficult period.

Meanwhile, tributes have continued to emerge on the fundraising page, with friends and acquaintances remembering Chadwick as a kind-hearted, caring woman who brought laughter and happiness to those around her.

The Daily Mail also reported that it had contacted the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office for comments regarding the incident.

The family’s fundraising appeal is aimed at ensuring that Chadwick and her unborn daughter can be brought home and laid to rest with dignity.
