The Nigerian Army has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of social media influencer, Justice Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, stating that he was taken into custody following investigations into alleged subversive communications with soldiers.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army said its attention was drawn to social media posts made by Chidiebere highlighting soldiers’ complaints about feeding and welfare conditions.

According to the Army, further investigation suggested that his interactions with some soldiers went beyond welfare-related discussions.

“Preliminary report reveals that the soldiers discussed a wide range of issues with Justice Chidiebere, who seemed to be inciting soldiers to create discontent within the system,” the statement said, adding that some of the conversations were “bordering on subversion.”

The Army warned that such actions could have serious security implications.

“A situation where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion has far-reaching implications on discipline and national security,” it added.

Chidiebere was arrested alongside some soldiers involved in the conversations. While the soldiers remain in military custody, the influencer has been handed over to civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Army also linked the arrest to alleged breaches of its social media policy and attempts to misinform the public, insisting that its actions were within the law.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to the rule of law and will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Chidiebere’s wife has publicly appealed for his release, saying she had been unable to reach him since his disappearance and describing the situation as unusual and distressing.

She called on authorities to return her husband, stressing that their children—especially their six-year-old daughter—needed their father.

“I don’t know what happened. He has never spent a night outside. Please bring my husband back to me and my children,” she said.

The arrest had earlier sparked public reactions, including criticism from activist Omoyele Sowore, who demanded his release and alleged that the influencer was targeted for speaking out on soldiers’ welfare and alleged extrajudicial killings.

The Army has, however, maintained that due process is being followed.
