An Ibadan-born Rotarian and cyclist, Olatunji Emmanuel Okedeyi, is expected to arrive in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on July 5 as part of his 10,000-kilometre charity ride from London to Lagos aimed at raising funds for the global eradication of polio.
Okedeyi, who is the President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Mushin Golden District 9112, began the transcontinental expedition to raise £100,000 in support of Rotary International’s campaign to end polio worldwide.
The journey, tagged “Emma Rides for Zero Polio,” has taken him across several countries, including Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea, with Lagos serving as the final destination.
The Nigerian Embassy in Cotonou is expected to receive and host the cyclist during his stopover before he resumes the final leg of the journey to Nigeria.
A native of Oke-Ofa, Atipe, Ibadan, Oyo State, Okedeyi said the expedition is intended to raise awareness and mobilise support for the global fight against polio while encouraging individuals, organisations and philanthropists to contribute to the cause.
He urged members of the public to support the campaign through donations, noting that proceeds from the initiative would go towards Rotary International’s efforts to achieve a polio-free world.
The cyclist also encouraged supporters to follow his journey through his social media platforms, where he provides daily updates, GPS tracking and firsthand accounts of his experiences on the road.
Rotary International has remained one of the leading partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, contributing resources and advocacy towards eliminating the disease across the world.
