Trump Demands Billions in Compensation From Iran Over American Deaths

United States President Donald Trump has demanded that Iran compensate American victims of violence allegedly linked to Tehran, including those killed in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole.

Trump made the demand in a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, August 10, 2026, while responding to reports that Iranian representatives were seeking compensation for damages suffered during the recent five-month military conflict between Iran and the United States.

According to Trump, the issue of compensation was not raised during previous negotiations between Washington and Tehran. However, he said Iran’s reported demand had prompted him to seek compensation for Americans who had been killed or seriously injured in conflicts involving Iranian-backed groups.

Trump specifically cited roadside bomb attacks and other military confrontations, while also referring to the role of former Iranian Quds Force commander, General Qassem Soleimani.

“I see that Representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran are asking for compensation for the damage done to them during the last five-month military conflict,” Trump said.

He added that the situation presented an opportunity for the United States to demand compensation for Americans affected by what he described as decades of Iranian-backed violence.

Trump also referenced the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole, a US Navy destroyer that was bombed while refuelling at the port of Aden, Yemen.

He said compensation should extend to the families of those killed or wounded in the attack and to “thousands of others killed in combat.”

The US president further accused the Iranian government of killing large numbers of protesters over the past five decades and called for compensation to be paid to their families.

“Additionally, compensation should be paid to the families of the hundreds of thousands of innocent protestors that Iran has killed over the last 50 years,” Trump said.

He also claimed that 52,000 people had been killed during the previous five months of conflict. However, he did not provide evidence or a detailed breakdown supporting the figure.

Trump did not explain how the proposed compensation would be calculated, who would be eligible to receive it or how such payments could be enforced.

He said he had instructed US representatives to make compensation a formal issue in any future negotiations with Iran.

“I have instructed my representatives to put this firmly into any, and all, future negotiations,” he said.

The demand comes amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme and the wider military confrontation between the two countries.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, while Tehran has denied pursuing nuclear weapons and maintained that its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes.

Trump’s reference to Soleimani is also significant. The former commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force was killed in a US drone strike ordered by Trump near Baghdad International Airport in January 2020.

The killing sharply escalated tensions between Iran and the United States, with Iran subsequently launching missile attacks against Iraqi military bases hosting US forces.

Trump’s latest position could add another major obstacle to future diplomatic efforts, as Washington’s demand for compensation would place the issue of past Iranian-linked violence alongside Iran’s nuclear activities and regional military influence in negotiations between the two countries.
