The annual Marian pilgrimage to the Notre-Dame d’Arigbo Grotto in Dassa-Zoumè begins today, Friday, August 21, and runs through Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Thousands of Catholic faithful from different parts of Benin and neighbouring countries are expected to converge on Dassa-Zoumè for three days of prayer, worship and spiritual reflection. The pilgrimage is one of the major Catholic religious gatherings in Benin and has made the Arigbo site an important centre of Marian devotion.
The programme includes Masses, spiritual teachings, confessions, Eucharistic adoration, Marian processions and prayer sessions. The gathering is expected to provide an opportunity for pilgrims to seek spiritual renewal and strengthen their faith.
The event is also significant for Dassa-Zoumè because of the large number of visitors it attracts, creating increased activity for transportation providers, traders, hotels and other businesses around the pilgrimage site.
2. 🏆 Beach Volleyball: Guépards Start Strong as Amazones Face Tough Challenge
Benin is represented at the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Championship in Alexandria, Egypt, with both men’s and women’s national teams competing.
The men’s pair, Daoudou Yacoubou and Tobby Tohouegnon, made an encouraging start by defeating Botswana 2–0. Their opening victory gives the Guépards a positive foundation as they continue their campaign against stronger opposition.
The situation has been more difficult for the women’s pair, Blandine Akako and Souraya Adamaou. The Amazones lost 2–0 to Nigeria before suffering another 2–0 defeat against Morocco.
With two defeats from their opening matches, the Amazones were placed under pressure to respond in their subsequent fixture against Lesotho.
Beyond the immediate competition, the championship carries additional importance because performances at the continental level can contribute to qualification pathways toward major international competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

4. 💧 Benin Highlights Major Progress in Access to Drinking Water
Access to safe drinking water remains an important development issue in Benin, and the country is highlighting significant progress made over recent years.
Recent reporting from Beninese media indicates that drinking-water service coverage rose from 42% in 2017 to 84.3% by the end of 2025. The progress was highlighted during international discussions on water access and development.
The improvement reflects sustained investment in water infrastructure, particularly in rural communities where access to reliable water has historically been more difficult.
Earlier World Bank data also documented substantial progress in rural water services, with national rural coverage reaching about 73% in 2022, compared with 42% in 2017.
The challenge now is not only expanding access but also ensuring that water services remain reliable, affordable and sustainable, particularly for communities that still experience difficulties accessing safe water.
