Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has reportedly died at the age of 66 after battling stage four cancer.
The Yoruba film icon was said to have died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a reported deterioration in his health in recent weeks.
The development has sparked grief among fans, colleagues and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond.
A video circulating online showed one of the actor’s daughters, Kira Taiwo, in tears as she struggled to come to terms with the reported loss. In the video, she was heard saying that she needed to contact her sisters and other members of the family.
The report of Ogogo’s death was also shared by Sebilu Nnajat TV, a platform associated with Islamic cleric Sheikh Al-Fulanny. The platform posted an emotional tribute, expressing prayers for the late actor’s soul.
The reported death comes only days after Ogogo’s family and management revealed that he was battling stage four cancer and required urgent medical attention.
The family had appealed for assistance, particularly access to suitable medical facilities and specialists capable of managing his condition. They clarified that their priority was securing appropriate treatment rather than receiving financial donations.
Ogogo’s daughter had earlier made an emotional appeal, explaining that the family only became fully aware of the seriousness of her father’s condition about three weeks earlier. She appealed to hospitals and medical professionals who could provide the required treatment.
The appeal generated a significant response, with the actor’s management later disclosing that hundreds of people had offered to assist.
Veteran actor Jide Kosoko, speaking on behalf of the team, said more than 300 and possibly over 500 people had reached out with offers of help.
However, Kosoko explained that moving Ogogo from the hospital where he was already receiving treatment posed a major challenge, particularly given the seriousness of his condition.
He had urged Nigerians and the actor’s numerous fans to continue praying for his recovery, expressing hope that the veteran actor would overcome the illness.
Ogogo’s management subsequently thanked fans, colleagues and supporters in Nigeria and abroad for their prayers, concern and assistance during the difficult period.
The latest report of his death has since triggered an outpouring of condolences and tributes across social media.
Taiwo Hassan was one of the most recognisable figures in the Yoruba-language movie industry. He began his acting career in the 1980s and went on to build a decades-long career as an actor, filmmaker and director.
He gained widespread recognition through numerous Yoruba-language productions, including the popular movie Owo Blow, and remained a respected figure in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
