The Nigeria Democratic Congress has dismissed reports that it has no governorship candidates in 12 states ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the reports as false and politically motivated.
The party, in a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said it had successfully nominated governorship candidates in all 28 states where governorship elections are scheduled to hold in 2027.
Director said reports suggesting that the party was absent in some states were designed to weaken the NDC’s growing political influence across the country.
According to him, the party was “shocked” by what it described as deliberate propaganda circulating in sections of the media and on social media.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the NDC has duly nominated and has governorship candidates in all the 28 states where governorship elections will take place in 2027,” he said.
The party also rejected claims that it was primarily a regional political organisation, insisting that it had established structures, candidates and supporters across Nigeria.
“Our party is fully prepared, fully structured, and fully on the ground in every state of the federation. The NDC is not a regional party. We are a national movement with candidates, structures, and supporters in all 36 states and the FCT,” the statement said.
To substantiate its position, the NDC released the names of its governorship candidates in the 12 states mentioned in the disputed reports.
The candidates include Senator Kabiru Marafa in Zamfara State; retired Rear Admiral Ibrahim Sanusi Kasim in Borno; John Odey in Cross River; and Babanta Michael Okon in Akwa Ibom.
Others are Nwofe Boniface in Ebonyi; Yakubu Ndam in Plateau; Ilu-Barde Aliyu in Katsina; Umar Besse in Kebbi; Jonga Gabakau in Yobe; Dutse Sani in Jigawa; Professor Yahaya Sani in Taraba; and Abdu Sidi Bomi in Niger State.
The clarification comes as political parties and emerging movements step up preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The NDC also urged journalists and media organisations to verify political information before publication, warning that the spread of unverified claims could undermine public trust in both the media and the electoral process.
The party further positioned itself as an alternative to Nigeria’s established political order, saying it would focus on security, job creation and accountability if elected in 2027.
“Nigerians are tired of the old order. They are tired of recycled failures. The NDC is the preferred party to salvage Nigeria. With credible candidates, a clear manifesto, and a commitment to security, jobs, and accountability, we are ready to rescue and rebuild this nation in 2027,” Director said.
He called on Nigerians to support the party, declaring that its “rescue mission” had begun.
