Popular Kano-based social media personality and political commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, has reportedly been killed at his residence in Kano State.
Dan Shagamu, who operated under the name Dan-Shagamu International, was widely known for his social media videos and commentary on political, religious and community affairs.
Amnesty International Nigeria confirmed his death in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, saying his body was discovered in a pool of blood at his home.
The rights organisation condemned the killing, describing it as a brutal attack after the commentator was allegedly overpowered by his assailants.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the killing of a social media political commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, whose body was found today in a pool of blood at his home in Kano,” the organisation said.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear as of Wednesday.
Unverified reports circulating on social media claimed that Dan Shagamu was killed in a particularly gruesome manner, with some reports using the Hausa expression “yankan rago”, meaning throat-slitting. However, these details had not been independently verified.
Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian authorities to thoroughly investigate the killing and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted.
“The Nigerian authorities must investigate this incident and ensure that those suspected of responsibility are brought to justice,” the organisation said, while tagging the Nigeria Police Force.
The rights group also raised concerns over what it described as growing politically related threats and intimidation ahead of the forthcoming elections.
“As the elections approach, we continue to receive disturbing reports of politically related threats to life and intimidation,” Amnesty International said.
The death of Dan Shagamu has generated widespread reactions across Kano, with his followers, friends and residents expressing shock and mourning his death on social media.
Many users have also offered prayers for the deceased and called for a swift investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding his killing and bring the perpetrators to justice.
