Nigeria’s gospel music community has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned gospel singer and evangelist, G.A. Idowu Aworinde, popularly celebrated for his inspirational Yoruba Christian songs.
Aworinde reportedly died on Monday, August 10, 2026. News of his death was announced through multiple social media sources, with tributes pouring in from admirers and members of the Christian community.
The late evangelist was regarded as one of Nigeria’s prominent visually impaired gospel musicians, using his music to spread messages of faith, hope and devotion to generations of Christians.
Through his music ministry and the Victory Voices Spiritual Singers, Aworinde composed and performed several enduring gospel songs that became popular among Yoruba-speaking Christians.
Some of his best-known works include “Mo Ki Obi Mi,” a song celebrating parents and motherhood; “Jesu Nikan Lo Ku Mi Ku L’aiye,” which encourages believers to place their trust in Jesus rather than worldly possessions; “Talotobe,” a popular praise work; and “Adura Owuro,” a cherished morning prayer song.
Beyond his contribution to gospel music, Aworinde was also recognised for his advocacy for the education, welfare and inclusion of visually impaired and physically challenged people in southwestern Nigeria.
Having lived with visual impairment himself, he devoted part of his life to promoting better educational opportunities for people with disabilities. Historical accounts indicate that he was among the early advocates involved in efforts to advance structured education for the blind, including initiatives around Ijebu-Igbo in Ogun State.
He reportedly worked with foreign non-governmental organisations on educational development programmes and also engaged government authorities, including the former Oyo State Government, to advocate greater recognition, funding and support for specialised institutions serving children with disabilities.
The Dictionary of African Christian Biography also described Aworinde as a highly respected singing evangelist who became a familiar name in Christian homes across Nigeria.
His death marks the loss of a distinctive voice in Yoruba gospel music and Christian evangelism.
Aworinde leaves behind a legacy defined by music, faith, courage and service. He is expected to be remembered not only for his powerful voice and timeless compositions but also for his efforts to promote dignity, education and opportunities for people living with disabilities.
