Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi have congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke following his victory in the 2026 Osun State governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, winner of Saturday’s election after results from all 30 local government areas were collated.
Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
The victory gave Adeleke a margin of 66,252 votes. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won in 19 of the 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11.
Reacting to the result, Atiku congratulated Adeleke, saying the outcome reflected the choice of Osun voters at the ballot box.
“I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke, @AAdeleke_01, on his re-election as Governor of Osun State,” Atiku said.
He also commended the people of Osun for their peaceful participation in the election and wished Adeleke continued success in office.
Similarly, Peter Obi congratulated Adeleke and the people of Osun State, describing the election result as an important victory for democracy.
Obi said the people of Osun had expressed their choice clearly, stressing that the power to elect leaders ultimately rests with the electorate.
He particularly praised young people in the state for what he described as their peaceful efforts to protect the democratic mandate.
According to Obi, the Osun election demonstrates that democracy is strengthened when citizens remain vigilant, participate actively and ensure that their votes count.
He urged Nigerians to remain politically engaged ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling on citizens to participate in the electoral process and protect their votes.
Obi further appealed to political leaders to place the interests of Nigerians above partisan considerations and uphold peace, unity and the rule of law.
He maintained that elections should be based on ideas, competence, character and service rather than violence.
Adeleke’s victory represents a major setback for the APC, which had regarded Osun as a crucial state and mobilised senior party leaders and a 276-member campaign council for the election.
The result is expected to trigger fresh political calculations within the APC and other political parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
For Adeleke, the victory secures another four-year term in office and provides an opportunity for his administration to continue its programmes and policies in Osun State.
