Voting is underway across Benin as the country holds its combined municipal and legislative elections, with President Patrice Talon and the First Lady participating in the process on Sunday in Cotonou.
The presidential couple voted in the Zongo area of Cotonou, within the 16th electoral constituency of the Littoral Department. They arrived at the Charles Guillot Public Primary School in the 5th arrondissement shortly after 11 a.m., drawing a large crowd of residents who lined the streets to welcome them. Despite tight security, supporters gathered enthusiastically, chanting prayers and messages of goodwill as the president and his wife made their way to the polling center.
The First Lady also received a warm reception from women in the crowd, responding with smiles and waves as the couple proceeded calmly to vote. Inside the polling unit, electoral officials were on duty, materials were in place, and voters were casting their ballots in an orderly and peaceful atmosphere.
President Talon voted without incident, under the observation of polling officials and election observers. After leaving the center, he briefly addressed journalists, expressing satisfaction with the conduct of the elections in their early hours. He noted that voter participation appeared encouraging and commended the calm and organized nature of the process.
The president called on eligible voters nationwide to turn out in large numbers and to respect electoral rules and timelines until the close of polls. He emphasized that broad citizen participation remains essential to strengthening democracy.
Beyond the electoral exercise, President Talon struck an optimistic note, describing the elections as a step toward continued national progress. He reiterated his belief that the country’s future holds promise and urged citizens to remain hopeful and committed to democratic values.
As polling continues throughout the day, voters across Cotonou and other parts of the country are expected to head to the polls to elect new municipal councils and renew the membership of the National Assembly. The elections have so far been marked by calm, civic engagement, and a visible commitment to democratic participation.
