A former Senior Special Assistant on New Media to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the scheduled dates for the 2027 general elections, noting that they coincide with the holy month of Ramadan.
INEC had earlier announced February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, while governorship and state assembly polls are slated for March 6, 2027.
Reacting via his verified X handle on Friday, Ahmad described his comment as a “respectful observation” following the commission’s announcement. He pointed out that the proposed dates fall within Ramadan, a period when Muslims dedicate themselves to fasting, prayers and spiritual reflection.
According to him, conducting such a major national exercise during Ramadan could affect participation, particularly among Muslim voters who may scale down strenuous or demanding activities to focus on religious obligations.
Ahmad stressed that if the goal is to promote inclusive and broad-based participation in the electoral process, the commission should take into account the timing of the elections in relation to the religious calendar.
He added that given Nigeria’s sizeable Muslim population, adjusting the dates could help ensure wider participation and convenience for citizens.
The former aide expressed hope that his suggestion would be considered in the spirit of inclusiveness and national unity.
