Arsenal moved closer to the Premier League title after a late 2–0 victory over Everton on Saturday, with teenager Max Dowman becoming the youngest scorer in the league’s history.
Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to break down Everton’s defence for most of the game at Emirates Stadium.
However, the breakthrough came in the 89th minute when Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres capitalised on an error from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Pickford failed to deal with Dowman’s cross, allowing Piero Hincapié to send the ball back into the six-yard box for Gyökeres to tap into an empty net.
The goal sparked celebrations among Arsenal players and fans as the team secured its fourth consecutive league win.
Dowman later sealed the victory in dramatic fashion. With Pickford upfield for an Everton corner late in the game, Arsenal launched a quick counter-attack and the 16-year-old ran the length of the pitch before slotting the ball into the empty net.
At just 16 years old, Dowman is now both the youngest scorer in Premier League history and Arsenal’s youngest goalscorer.
The win puts Arsenal 10 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who were scheduled to face West Ham United later on Saturday.
Arsenal, who last won the league title in 2004, are chasing their first English championship in 22 years. Despite an unconvincing performance against Everton, the victory strengthens belief that Arteta’s side could finally end the club’s long wait for the title.
Attention now turns to a busy week for the Gunners. They will face Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie, currently level at 1-1, before travelling to Wembley Stadium for the League Cup final against Manchester City.
Arsenal’s next Premier League match will be on April 11 against AFC Bournemouth.
